Anthony Rendon has mild MCL sprain in left knee

VIERA, Fla. - Nationals manager Matt Williams said this morning that X-rays revealed that Anthony Rendon has a mild sprain of his media collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee.

The injury occurred in the top of the sixth inning of Monday's game, when Rendon lunged to his left making a spectacular stop on a ground ball in the hole and then jumped to his feet, firing to first for the out. Rendon remained in the game and singled in the bottom half of the inning before leaving in the seventh.

"It's mild, but it wasn't getting better as quickly as we thought it was and he wanted it to be, so we got a picture of it yesterday," Williams said. "We'll shut him down for a few days and make sure that it's good. It's odd that he did it on the dive, but it is what it is and we'll just make sure that we take care of it. So in the next week or so he'll be back playing. It's just an odd injury."

Williams said there isn't any significant structural problem with Rendon's knee.

"There's no issue with strength. It's not loose. It's a very mild sprain, but we just want to be cautious with it and make sure that when gets back out there he doesn't feel pain and he's ready to go so he'll be a few days down," Williams said.
