FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Mets rookie right-hander Noah Syndergaard has allowed just three baserunners through six innings. Matt den Dekker roped a leadoff double in the third but was stranded. Syndergaard walked Yunel Escobar and then hit Bryce Harper with two outs in the sixth but Jayson Werth struck out looking to end the inning.
Harper took a 97 mph fastball of his left shin, knocking the 22-year-old to his knees. He remained in the game and is 0-for-2 with his batting average dropping to .329.
Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez walked the bases loaded in the third but escaped the jam. The left-hander has yielded just two hits through five innings.
Update: Clint Robinson smashed a solo homer to the upper deck in right field to start the seventh. It was Robinson's 10th longball of the season and second in as many games.
Update II: Gonzalez left after six scoreless innings. He yielded three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Right-hander Blake Treinen walked Lucas Duda to start the seventh and then left after surrendering a one-out single to Ruben Tejada.
Left-hander Matt Grace followed Treinen to the mound, giving up a game-tying RBI single to Juan Lagares.
Update III: Harper drilled his 42nd homer on a two-run shot to the upper deck in right with two outs in the eighth.
Update IV: Left-hander Felipe Rivero struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.
The Nationals beat the Mets 3-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.
