The day has come at last. The 2017 season is here, and it all gets underway this afternoon on South Capitol Street when the Nationals host the Marlins in Game 1 of 162 (or more).
There will be plenty of pomp and circumstance leading up to first pitch at 1:05 p.m., from the introduction of both teams to the ceremonial first pitches thrown by one member of each of the five branches of the military to the national anthem by the U.S. Army Brass Quintet and flyover by the F/A-18E Super Hornets to the presentations of the 2016 National League Cy Young Award to Max Scherzer and a 2016 NL Silver Slugger Award to second baseman Daniel Murphy.
As for the game, it's Stephen Strasburg on the mound to make the fourth opening day start of his career (his first since 2014). This should have been a marquee pitching matchup with Jose Fernandez starting for the visitors, but the Marlins will take the field with heavy hearts a little more than six months since Fernandez's tragic death. They will instead hand the ball to 33-year-old veteran Edinson Volquez, who joined the club this winter on a two-year, $22 million contract.
As always, Bryce Harper is the guy to watch at the plate. He has four career opening day homers, having played in only four career opening days. Anthony Rendon, however, is not in the lineup, seven days after fouling a ball off his left calf. It'll be Stephen Drew starting at third base in his place today ...
