CHICAGO - It is a spectacular summer day on the North Side, with not a cloud in the sky, a nice cool breeze blowing from the northwest and temperatures climbing into the upper 70s by the time the Nationals and Cubs take the field for the second game of their weekend series.
The Nats originally had Gio Gonzalez penciled in for this start, but he has officially been placed on the paternity leave list and is back in D.C. for the birth of his second child. Erick Fedde has officially been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, but he'll be starting Sunday's game. Today it's Edwin Jackson, who may not get the warmest welcome from the Wrigley faithful.
Jackson, you may recall, signed a four-year, $52 million contract with the Cubs after his first season with the Nationals in 2012. It felt a bit excessive at the time, and it indeed was, because Jackson wound up going 16-34 with a 5.37 ERA in Chicago, getting bumped out of the rotation and ultimately getting released with 1 1/2 seasons remaining on his contract. We'll see if the veteran right-hander can duplicate his positive efforts from two of his three starts with Washington so far this summer.
Speaking of veteran right-handers, John Lackey is starting for the Cubs this afternoon. The Nats rocked him for eight runs in 5 1/3 innings on June 28 , and though he's been better since the 38-year-old certainly isn't the pitcher anymore he once was.
