The Nationals' remarkable run to a championship last October was defined by victories away from Washington. The Nats won Game 5 of the National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium. They won Games 6 and 7 of the World Series at Minute Maid Park. All told, they went a stunning 8-1 on the road during the postseason, the only loss coming in their first NLDS game in Los Angeles. For whatever reason, this team was really comfortable playing on the road.
Which brings us to tonight, when the Nationals finally play their first true road game of 2020. Technically speaking, they're already 2-0 on the "road," having swept both games of the series against the Blue Jays that had to be moved to D.C. Now they're actually in another city for the first time, opening a four-game series with the Mets at Citi Field.
Tonight's opener is a rematch of last week's game at Nationals Park, with left-handers Patrick Corbin and Steven Matz squaring off against each other. The Nats had their way with Matz, knocking him out after scoring five runs on seven hits in three innings, with Howie Kendrick and Josh Harrison each homering. Unsurprisingly, both right-handed veterans are in tonight's lineup, with Harrison actually batting second and starting in right field in place of the struggling Adam Eaton.
Corbin was outstanding at the outset of last week's game, retiring 10 of the Mets' first 12 batters. He did give up a two-run homer to Michael Conforto in the fourth and another run in the fifth before getting pulled with two on and two out in the sixth and his pitch count at 102. His challenge tonight is to sustain success all the way through the end of his outing.
As you probably know by now, coverage of road games is going to be different this year. Our MASN crew is all assembling at Nationals Park to call the game off TV monitors, and I'm in my home office watching along with everyone else. We'll still have access to manager Davey Martinez and the players' Zoom press conferences, and hopefully the difference in coverage won't be too noticeable on your end.
