The final weekend of the regular season has arrived, and so it is now, as Dusty Baker described it the other day: "Hero Time." That means it's time to play through nagging ailments and push yourself to do more than you might have during the vast majority of the season.
In that vein, Bryce Harper is back in the lineup tonight. Harper had missed the last four games with a swollen right thumb suffered on that slide in Pittsburgh when Jung Ho Kang faked the tag. He said he was ready to play Wednesday, but with poor weather and such, Baker wanted him to wait. Well, the wait is over.
Daniel Murphy, on the other hand, remains sidelined, though it sounds like the Nationals are comfortable with the idea of letting their MVP candidate avoid full game action until the playoffs, since he's still taking some batting practice, throwing and jogging.
A.J. Cole gets the start tonight. Yes, he was suspended five games by Major League Baseball earlier this week for intentionally throwing near Kang's head in retaliation for the Harper incident, but he's allowed to pitch while his appeal is still pending.
The Marlins, of course, come to town with hearts still heavy. It's only been five days since Jose Fernandez's tragic death, and the pitcher's funeral only was held yesterday. It's hard to imagine how these guys are finding a way to play on through the grief, but they'll have the full support of everyone here in D.C. tonight and throughout the weekend ...
