Major league debuts are always special. But how about two starting pitchers making their major league debuts against each other? That's a rare special occasion. Tonight we'll witness it when Wil Crowe and Sixto Sánchez square off in the nightcap of this 14-innings doubleheader between the Nationals and Marlins.
Crowe isn't as highly touted as Sánchez, who was the key piece Miami got from Philadelphia in the J.T. Realmuto trade, but he's no slouch. The Nationals' second-round pick in 2017 from South Carolina, Crowe has been on the club's radar ever since and came to spring training with a chance to show he was ready to be called upon if the need arose at some point.
Well, the need has arisen, because of this doubleheader. Crowe officially was promoted as the extra 29th man for the game, so he'll need to go back to the alternate training site in Fredericksburg afterward. But you also have to think the Nats didn't add him to their 40-man roster just to make one start and never return. We'll see how this all plays out, but a strong debut from Crowe tonight could open the door for more opportunities later this season.
Don't forget: The Marlins are actually the home team tonight because this is one of the three makeup games from the lost weekend series last month. It'll be the second time this season the Nats have been the visiting team in their own ballpark.
