They are playing baseball tonight in Boston, where the Nationals make their first trip to Fenway Park since 2015 and only their fourth visit in club history. Each of the three previous series there has been lopsided: The not-so-good 2006 Nats were swept, the very good 2012 team swept the Red Sox in something of a coming-out party and the disappointing 2015 team played poorly while losing two-of-three in a mid-April series.
Tonight is a special occasion across the majors, which is celebrating a delayed Jackie Robinson Day. All uniformed personnel will be wearing nameless No. 42 jerseys. There will be more tributes and statements, which certainly carry more weight than usual given current events.
From a pure baseball standpoint, the Nationals need to have a good weekend against a Red Sox club that is struggling. Who'd have thought the last two World Series champs would be meeting under these circumstances, each in last place in their respective divisions? The Red Sox expected to be rebuilding this season. The Nats did not, so they could really use a couple of wins over the next three days.
Max Scherzer gets the start, pushed back a day after his originally scheduled outing against the Phillies was postponed. He'll have a new-look lineup working behind him against Boston lefty MartÃn Pérez. The notable changes: Juan Soto is batting second and serving as designated hitter, Adam Eaton has been bumped down to the sixth spot and Michael A. Taylor gets a rare start in left field (where he'll have to contend with the Green Monster).
