The Nationals opened this bizarre season 0-6 against the Phillies. Who'd have thought they'd have a chance to finish 4-6 against their division rivals? A win tonight would complete a four-game sweep, deal Philadelphia another blow to its postseason chances and keep the Nats' minuscule chances alive for another day.
A loss tonight doesn't automatically eliminate the Nationals. One of the Cardinals, Brewers or Giants would also need to win, raising their season win total to 28 (which the Nats could no longer reach). But, as has been the case the last several nights, the margin for error is nearly nonexistent.
The big lineup news is that Juan Soto is starting in right field for the second straight game. Manager Davey Martinez said he just wants to see how Soto looks out there. (He did play right field throughout his brief minor league career.) Martinez also coyly admitted it's possible the Nationals would look to add a left fielder this offseason, so there may be reason to want to see now how Soto handles right.
Erick Fedde, meanwhile, becomes the first member of the rotation to make his final start of the season. It's been an up-and-down-and-back-up-again year for Fedde, who started off well, struggled for a little while but has rebounded nicely his last two starts. Some of his struggles did come against these Phillies, who scored 10 runs in 11 innings against him last month. He'll have a chance to reverse that trend tonight and end his 2020 on a positive note.
