SAN DIEGO - It's another picture-perfect day here. Too bad we have to leave after today's series finale at Petco Park. The Nationals will hope to leave on a high note with back-to-back victories and a four-game split with the Padres. To do that, they'll need a big start out of Stephen Strasburg in his hometown and some sustained offense against a conga line of San Diego relievers.
Strasburg notched his 100th career win his last time out, but it was actually one of his worst performances of the season (five runs in five innings against the White Sox). He'll need to avoid the first-inning trouble he got into against Chicago (four runs) before he settled in and made the most out of his outing. This is his fifth career start at Petco Park; he's 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA here.
The Padres, meanwhile, are starting Johnny Wholestaff. OK, technically it's Luis Perdomo. But he'll be just the first of a parade of relievers that take the mound today as the Padres try to account for injuries to their rotation. This could be viewed as an advantageous scenario for the Nationals. But we've already seen San Diego's bullpen shut down this lineup for the better part of three nights, so don't just assume this is going to go well for the visitors.
