The Nationals couldn't have gotten their week off to a better start than they did Monday night, thrashing the Marlins 18-1 and getting seven scoreless innings out of Jon Lester. Tonight we find out if that was the start of something big, or just a one-night blip.
It's probably too much to ask Paolo Espino to toss seven scoreless innings himself, but the journeyman right-hander has proven capable of pitching five strong frames more than once this year. And he's facing a Marlins lineup that remains depleted, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Garrett Cooper on the injured list.
The Nats lineup is facing a tougher test tonight in Trevor Rogers, the All-Star lefty who enters with a 2.31 ERA and 1.066 WHIP. The Nationals did get him for three runs in five innings back on May 2, all three runs scoring on a Ryan Zimmerman homer. And wouldn't you know it, Zimmerman is batting cleanup tonight, starting at first base while Josh Bell sits.
Also notable: Tres Barrera is catching for the third straight day, so it appears he has earned the right to play more than René Rivera for now. And Victor Robles is back in the lineup after coming off the bench the last two days.
