The Nationals will send Stephen Strasburg to the hill this evening trying to even up their series with the Brewers and hoping the right-hander can continue to progress after being activated off the disabled list last month.
Since returning a month on the DL with a cervical nerve impingement, Strasburg has twice faced the Phillies, working four innings in an 8-7 home win on Aug. 22 and six innings in a 5-3 triumph where he posted his seventh victory on Aug. 27 at Citizens Bank Park (his only win in his last five starts).
Strasburg has struggled in three career starts versus the Brewers, posting an 0-2 record with a 5.30 ERA. But current Brewers have only a cumulative .177/.293/.253 slash line off the righty.
Ryan Braun is 1-for-3 off Strasburg, Jonathan Schoop is 1-for-4 and Christian Yelich is 8-for-37 with a homer and three RBIs.
Right-hander Chase Anderson will start for Milwaukee. He's 9-7 with a 4.04 ERA in 26 starts this season, and is 3-0 with a 4.79 ERA in seven starts since July 21.
Current Nationals slash .375/.333/.750 off Anderson in a small sample size that includes only four players. Mark Reynolds is 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, while Bryce Harper and Anthony Renson are both 1-for-2 off Anderson.
The Nationals added a pair of players to the roster today, the first day rosters can expand to 40 players. Catcher Pedro Severino was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse and the Nats selected the contract of right-hander Austwn WIlliams from Syracuse.
Severino hit .171 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 63 games with the Nationals earlier this season. He was on a nine-game hitting streak at Syracuse, where he'd batted .269 with six homers and 13 RBIs in 33 games.
Williams, a sixth-round pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas State University, moved to the bullpen after working exclusively as a starting pitcher for the first four seasons of his pro career, and went 3-3 with a 1.19 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 33 games (including two starts) between Double-A Harrisburg and Syracuse. The 25-year-old walked 17 and struck out 89.
