Gonzalez finds a groove, DeRosa stays in one (Nats win 2-1)

JUPITER, Fla. - Poor Adam Wainwright. The Cardinals right-hander was just minding his business, enjoying a day in-between starts, when he saw his truck being driven onto the field and "given away" to a lucky "fan" at Roger Dean Stadium. The "fan" came sprinting down from the seats, celebrating his "prize" with a small child in his arms, as a stunned Wainwright watched from the Cards' dugout. Then Wainwright saw teammate Lance Berkman pop his head out of the driver's side window with a giant smile on his face and knew he was on the receiving end of a fantastic April Fool's joke. The Cardinals' dugout went nuts. Gio Gonzalez has just come off the mound after throwing five stellar innings, allowing just one run on three hits and a walk. The Nationals lefty struck out seven and threw 81 pitches in his final spring training start, with 52 strikes. Gonzalez also added a well-struck single up the middle in his lone at-bat of the day. So the guy can't lay down a bunt, but he can smoke line drive singles? Interesting. Gonzalez has been inconsistent this spring, but he was on-point today, and will go into the regular season coming off a great outing. Meanwhile, Danny Espinosa - hitting right-handed and away from Space Coast Stadium - just smacked a solo home run to right field, tying the game 1-1 here in the sixth inning. It's the first and first RBI of spring for Espinosa. Mark DeRosa is 1-for-2 with a single today, lowering (yes, lowering) his on-base percentage to .585 this spring. The 37-year-old DeRosa is finally healthy and has been in a zone at the plate. Update: The Nationals defeated the Cardinals 2-1.
