We've got both a no-doubt-about-it home run and a memorable first in the second inning. As a result, the Nationals have a 2-0 lead and rookie outfielder Michael A. Taylor has his first major league hit.
Bryce Harper took care of the firepower, crushing a two-run homer to left field after Rafael Montero had walked Ian Desmond to lead off the frame. It's the fifth home run of the season for Harper.
After Wilson Ramos struck out, Taylor bounced a single up the middle, his first hit coming in his first at-bat in his major league debut.
We're heading to the bottom of the second with the Nats ahead 2-0.
Update: The game is in a rain delay in the third inning.
Update II: Following a 25-minute rain delay, play has resumed.
Update III: A solo homer by Anthony Rendon and a two-run shot from Desmond, both to left field, have upped the lead to 5-0 in the sixth and knocked Montero from the game in favor of reliever Carlos Torres. Later in the inning, Taylor notched his first major league homer, a two-run blast to right to make it 7-0.
Per the Nationals PR department, it's the team's first inning with three home runs since Sept. 5, 2012, when Roger Bernadina, Harper and Adam LaRoche went deep against the Cubs. Taylor becomes the first rookie to homer in his major league debut since Tommy Milone on Sept. 3, 2011 and the fourth overall. Desmond and Brandon Watson also turned the trick.
Meanwhile, right-hander Doug Fister has allowed only three hits through five innings, fanning three.
Update IV: Fister's night is done. He worked seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three. He threw 107 pitches, 71 for strikes.
Update V: Ross Detwiler worked the final two innings and the Nats won 7-1.
Denard Span went 0-for-5, ending his 14-game hitting streak and a 36-game streak of safely reaching base.
