LaRoche activated from DL, Walters optioned to Triple-A

The Washington Nationals today optioned infielder Zach Walters to Syracuse and recalled from rehab and reinstated first baseman Adam LaRoche from the 15-Day Disabled List. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. LaRoche returns to the active roster after being placed on the 15-Day Disabled List on May 11 (retroactive to May 10) with a right quad strain. Upon being relegated to the DL, LaRoche led all qualified Nationals in batting average (.319, 36-for-113), on-base percentage (.421), slugging percentage (.504) and OPS (.925). His five home runs were also tied with Danny Espinosa and Anthony Rendon for the team lead. LaRoche is a career .266 (1271-for-4783) hitter with 306 doubles, 222 home runs, 767 RBI and an .814 OPS in 1370 games spanning 11 big league seasons. In two rehab contests (one game apiece with Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League and Potomac of the Single-A Carolina League), the 34 year-old LaRoche went 1-for-5 (.200) with a walk. Walters, 24, hit .182 (6-for-33) with three home runs and four RBI in 27 games with Washington.
