OAKLAND - Adam LaRoche will serve as the designated hitter while Kevin Frandsen will man first base as right-hander Doug Fister makes his anticipated Nationals debut tonight against the Athletics.
LaRoche will be the Nats' DH for the second time this season while Frandsen plays first for the first time in 2014. He did start at first 35 times, and appeared there 40 times overall, for the Phillies last season.
Fister comes off the disabled list to make his first start of the year, and first since the Nationals acquired him from the Tigers during the offseason.
