BALTIMORE - The Nationals narrowly missed a prime opportunity to light up the scoreboard in the first. After Yunel Escobar legged out an infield single, Bryce Harper drilled an 0-1 slider from Wei-Yin Chen over Chris Davis' head and off the wall in right. Davis regrouped and managed to throw the ball in, forcing Escobar to hold at third.
Wilson Ramos followed with a drive to right-center which appeared to be headed for the gap before Davis sprinted over, reached up and made the grap to end the Nationals' threat.
Nationals starter Max Scherzer struck out Manny Machado and Jimmy Paredes to start the game before Adam Jones yanked a hanging curveball over the fence in left for a solo home run.
Update: The Nationals battled back with a two-out rally in the fourth. Dan Uggla's RBI single to center tied the game and then Tyler Moore delivered a two-run double to give the Nats the lead.
Jones' homer is the only hit Scherzer has allowed through four innings. The right-hander has three strikeouts with no walks.
Update II: Scherzer has thrown 100 pitches through eight innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Update III: Jones smacked another solo homer off Scherzer with two outs in the ninth causing Nationals manager Matt Williams to pull the right-hander after throwing 115 pitches. Scherzer allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings.
Drew Storen struck out Chris Davis to collect his 27th save.
The Nationals beat the Orioles 3-2 to win the series.
