Max Scherzer makes history with second no-hitter of season

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Nationals ace Max Scherzer has not allowed a baserunner through the first five innings. The right-hander has struck out eight Mets and only gone to two three-ball counts.

This is the fourth time Scherzer has taken a perfect game into the sixth inning this season. It's also the second time he has taken a no-hitter into the sixth against the Mets.

Scherzer has thrown just 55 pitches.

The Nationals took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Wilson Ramos scoring Michael A. Taylor.

Update: Scherzer lost his bid for a perfect game in the sixth when Yunel Escobar skipped a throw to first after fielding Kevin Plawecki's routine grounder.

Clint Robinson wasn't able to scoop the one-hopper and Escobar was charged with his seventh error of the season.

Scherzer battled back, retiring the next three hitters in order. He whiffed Curtis Granderson for his ninth strikeout to end the frame.

Dan Uggla launched a solo homer to left off Mets right-hander Hansel Robles.

Update II: Scherzer whiffed the side in the seventh. He has 12 strikeouts on the night. It's the 11th time this season that Scherzer has fanned 10-plus hitters in a game.

Update III: Scherzer struck out the side in the eighth again. He has whiffed seven straight and has 15 punch-outs in the game.

Update IV: Scherzer strikes out a career-high 17 batters and completes his second no-hittter of the season.

The Nationals beat the Mets 2-0.
