The Nationals placed outfielder Nate McLouth on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon, and have recalled Steven Souza Jr. from Triple-A Syracuse to take McLouth's place on the 25-man roster.
McLouth's DL stint is retroactive to Aug. 2. The veteran outfielder has struggled offensively this season, hitting .179 in 139 at-bats.
He has stolen four bases, drawn 16 walks and played solid defense when called upon, but the playing time has been sparse of late for the 32-year-old.
Souza has absolutely dominated the Triple-A level, hitting .354/.435/.601 with 18 homers and 24 stolen bases in 91 games for Syracuse this season. He leads the International League in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Don't see that too often.
Souza was up with the Nats twice previously, going 1-for-8 with a walk and three strikeouts earlier this season.
Update: Souza has gotten bumped up a level, and now so, too, has outfielder Michael A. Taylor, who has been tearing up the Eastern League this season.
Taylor will move up to Triple-A Syracuse.
The 23-year-old speedster, who is the Nats' top position player prospect, was hitting .313/.396/.539 with 22 homers and 34 stolen bases at Double-A Harrisburg this season.
