Following a week in which he hit .500 (13-for-26) with two doubles, five home runs, 13 RBI, one walk and 11 runs scored, Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network.
Zimmerman hit safely in all six games he played, including four multi-hit efforts. He also scored at least one run in every game, and drove in multiple runs in five of the six games. He recorded the 17th multi-home run game of his career on Friday against the New York Mets.
On top of his impressive numbers last week, Zimmerman added to his list of career accomplishments, moving up on the franchise's (Montreal/Washington) all-time home run list. With his home run on Saturday against New York, Zimmerman passed Hall of Famer Andre Dawson to move into second place all-time with 226.
On the week, Zimmerman recorded a 1.154 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage, collecting seven extra base hits and reaching base in 14 of his 28 plate appearances.
Entering play on Monday, Zimmerman leads Major League Baseball hitters in batting average (1st, .420), slugging percentage (1st, .886), OPS (1st, 1.345), RBI (1st, 29), hits (1st, 37), extra-base hits (1st, 19), and home runs (T1st, 11). He also ranks among league leaders in multi-hit games (2nd, 12), and on-base percentage (6th, .458).
This is the fourth Player of the Week award of Zimmerman's career, but his first since July 16-22, 2012. His award marks the second consecutive week in which a Nationals player has claimed the Player of the Week Award, joining Bryce Harper, who earned the award last week.
The second league award for the Nationals this season, Zimmerman adds to the haul he's brought in (July 16-22, 2012; Aug. 15-21, 2011; July 30-Aug. 5, 2007) as well as those won by Harper (May 4-10, May 11-17, Sept. 14-20, 2015; April 11-17, 2016; & April 17-23, 2017), Danny Espinosa (June 27-July 3, 2016), Max Scherzer (June 15-21 & Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2015), Stephen Strasburg (Sept. 14-20, 2015 & June 7-13, 2010), Jordan Zimmermann (June 2-8, 2014 & Sept. 22-28, 2014), Adam LaRoche (Sept. 1-7, 2014), Jayson Werth (June 30-July 6, 2014), Josh Willingham (July 27-Aug. 2, 2009), Cristian Guzman (Aug. 25-31, 2008), and Nick Johnson (May 31-June 6, 2005) as other Nationals honorees.
