NEW YORK - Gio Gonzalez's early season run of dominance continues. So does his longstanding run of dominance at Citi Field.
Gonzalez carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and wound up allowing just two hits to the Mets before handing things over to the Nationals' reconfigured bullpen, which pieced together the final eight outs necessary to lock up a 3-1 victory.
Matt Wieters, Trea Turner and Ryan Zimmerman all drove in runs off Jacob deGrom to lead the Nationals to their sixth straight win, the last five of those on the road. They'll go for their second straight road series sweep of a division rival Sunday night.
Gonzalez held the Mets scoreless through five innings en route to his second win of the year. He now sports a 1.35 ERA in four starts and improved to 9-1 with a 1.62 ERA in 14 career starts at Citi Field.
The veteran lefty was wild early on, walking two batters during a 30-pitch first inning. But he then proceeded to retire 13 batters in a row to carry a no-hitter into the sixth. That run at history was quashed when Juan Lagares singled to center, and Asdrúbal Cabrera put New York on the board moments later with an RBI single.
But Gonzalez finished strong, striking out both Jay Bruce and Neil Walker on changeups to end the sixth and then retired Curtis Granderson to open the seventh before manager Dusty Baker went to his bullpen.
Blake Treinen, in his first appearance since losing the closer's job earlier this week, recorded two quick outs on three pitches to finish out the bottom of the seventh. Left-hander Enny Romero tossed a 1-2-3 eighth on nine pitches. And with Shawn Kelley unavailable after pitching three of the last four days, Romero returned to start the ninth and record two outs before rookie Koda Glover finished things off for his first career save.
The Nationals spent the first three innings flailing away at deGrom, who struck out seven of the first 11 batters he faced. But they started displaying some more patience against the Mets right-hander after that and made the most of it.
Two walks and a single left the bases loaded for Wieters in the top of the fourth. Wieters responded with an RBI single to right, though Daniel Murphy was easily thrown out trying to score on the play.
Back-to-back doubles by Adam Eaton and Turner in the top of the fifth produced the day's second run. Then, after Bryce Harper was intentionally walked, Zimmerman singled home another run to extend the Nationals' lead to 3-0.
Despite a 10-strikeout performance, deGrom also finished with six walks (one intentional) and was pulled with two outs in the sixth.
