Nationals overpower Marlins in 5-1 win

Ryan Zimmerman crushed a solo homer into the Red Porch at Nationals Park to lead off the second inning. It was Zimmerman's 12th home run of the season. He has 11 RBIs over his last six games.

Danny Espinosa and Jordan Zimmermann reached on bunt singles to start the second. After Jayson Werth grounded into a double play, Anthony Rendon ripped a base hit to right, scoring Espinosa.

zimmerman-close-swing-back-white-sidebar.jpgUpdate: Rendon led off the sixth with a bloop single to right. Three batters later, Clint Robinson belted a deep homer into the Marlins bullpen. The two-out two-run shot was Robinson's sixth home run of the season.

Ian Desmond followed by crushing Marlins starter Tom Koehler's first-pitch curveball high up the grassy berm in center field. The solo blast was Desmond's team-leading 10th homer since the All-Star break. It was the third time the Nationals have hit back-to-back homers this season.

Justin Bour put the Marlins on the scoreboard with a solo home run to lead off the seventh.

Zimmermann allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts over seven innings.

Update II: Matt Thornton pitched a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Papelbon closed out the game with a perfect ninth.

The Nationals beat the Marlins 5-1 and picked up a game on the Mets. The Nats now trail first-place New York by 5 1/2 games.
