Nationals recall outfielder Brian Goodwin

The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Brian Goodwin from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday and placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Aug. 1) with a left wrist contusion. Nationals president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Goodwin, 25, joins Washington for the first major league assignment of his career. In 109 games for Triple-A Syracuse, Goodwin is hitting .284 with 25 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 62 RBIs, 40 walks, 14 stolen bases and 35 runs scored. Goodwin, an International League midseason All-Star, ranked among league leaders in RBIs (second), doubles (sixth), and stolen bases (T-10th ) at the time of his promotion.

An elite, fleet-footed defender with the ability to play all three outfield spots, Goodwin emerged as one of the top hitters in Washington's minor league system in 2016. At the time of his promotion, he ranked among Nationals farmhands in RBIs (second, 62), home runs (tied third, 11) and batting average (10th, .284).

Goodwin is in his fifth full season in Washington's system after being selected No. 34 overall in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Miami Dade Community College.

Zimmerman, 31, is hitting .222 with 27 of his 67 hits going for extra bases in 80 games (14 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs). He was struck on the left wrist by a pitch from San Francisco Giants closer Santiago Casilla in the ninth inning of Washington's 3-1 loss at AT&T Park on July 31.
