Nationals recall Trea Turner, place Ryan Zimmerman on paternity list

The Nationals recalled infielder Trea Turner from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday and placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the Paternity List. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Turner, 22, joins the Nationals for his first Major League assignment of the season. The Nationals' No. 2 prospect, according to Baseball America, and the No. 9 prospect in all of baseball entering the 2016 season, Turner earned his second MLB call-up by hitting .310 with a .376 on-base percentage in 50 games at Triple-A. The speedy Turner has clubbed 13 doubles, five triples, and three home runs. He's also stolen 17 bases, scored 38 runs and driven in 24 for the Chiefs. Turner leads the International League in runs scored (38) and stolen bases (17) while ranking second in hits (61) and fifth in batting average (.310). Turner was named the International League Player of the Week for games from April 11-17, after hitting .433 (13-for-30) with three doubles, one home run, five RBI, four walks, two stolen bases and six runs scored. During the week for which he was honored, Turner went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a 4-3 win, April 12 vs. Buffalo (TOR), and posted back-to-back three-hit games, April 14-15 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (NYY). He clubbed his first home run of the season, April 16 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, a solo shot in the third inning. Acquired by the Nationals, along with right-handed pitcher Joe Ross, in a three-team trade that was agreed upon Dec. 18, 2015 and completed June 14, Turner hit .225 in 27 Major League games in 2015. Turner began the 2015 season in Double-A with the Padres (San Antonio), before joining Double-A Harrisburg on June 16. He was promoted to Triple-A Syracuse 10 days later and joined the Nationals on Aug. 21. Zimmerman, 31, is hitting .250 with a .312 on-base percentage and a .451 slugging percentage. Zimmerman has collected 11 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, and 26 RBI for the Nationals in 48 games this season. The Nationals' first baseman and his wife, Heather, welcomed their second child on Thursday, June 2.
