Nationals reward Williams by picking up 2016 option

VIERA, Fla. - The Nationals announced this morning that they have picked up the team option for 2016 on manager Matt Williams' contract.

It was a pretty good first year for Williams, who made his major league managerial debut with the Nats in 2014. The best record in the National League (96-66) and a runaway NL East title helped Wiliams to earn recognition as the NL Manager of the Year.

"It shows the great confidence we have in Matt to continue to lead this team on the field. During his rookie season, he helped us navigate through injuries and led us to our second NL East division title in three years. His leadership has earned him the respect of our players, coaches and his colleagues around the league."

Williams' contract was only guaranteed for two years (2014-15) with one-year club options in 2016 and 2017. This effectively allows Williams to go manage this season without any speculation of his immediate future.

"Matt's accomplishments on the field speak for themselves," said Nationals owner Theodore N. Lerner in the team's statement. "He takes great pride not only in how the game is played, but in our players. We are fortunate to have Matt as our manager and look forward to him leading us to new heights."

Williams will address having his option picked up this afternoon, when he meets with the media for the first time in camp.

Williams usually posts a quote for the day in the clubhouse. Here's his offering today as the Nationals officially get started on the field for their first official workout for pitchers and catchers:

"He who holds the ball controls the game."
