The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Steven Fuentes on Friday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Fuentes, 23, joins the 40-man roster for the first time in his professional career. He was a member of Washington's Alternate Training Site (Fredericksburg) during the 2020 season. He is rated by MLBPipeline.com as the No. 26 prospect in Washington's Minor League system.

In 2019, Fuentes went 6-5 with a 2.23 ERA and one save in 23 games (11 starts). He struck out 89 batters, walked 22 and surrendered just one home run across 80.2 innings pitched. Fuentes started the season with Single-A Potomac, where he allowed just one earned run in 17.0 innings pitched (0.53 ERA). He was promoted to Double-A Harrisburg on May 8 and went 5-4 with a 2.69 ERA in 15 games (11 starts).

A native of Puerto Armuelles, Panama, Fuentes was signed by the Nationals as a non-drafted free agent on July 19, 2013.
