The Washington Nationals selected the contract of infielder Mark Reynolds from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday and placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to May 10) with a right oblique strain. Additionally, the Nationals transferred right-handed pitcher Joaquin Benoit to the 60-day disabled list. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Reynolds, 34, joins the Nationals after appearing in 10 games with Triple-A Syracuse. A veteran of 11 Major League seasons, Reynolds will make Washington his eighth MLB home. In 148 games with the Colorado Rockies in 2017, Reynolds hit .267 with 22 doubles, one triple, 30 home runs, 97 RBI, 69 walks and 82 runs scored. The 30 home runs were his most since hitting 37 home runs in 2011 and his 97 RBI were tied for the second-most of his career, his most since posting a career-high 102 RBI in 2009 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Reynolds has extensive Major League experience in the infield at first base (695 games) and third base (773 games). His 281 career home runs ranked 11th among active players entering the 2018 season.
Zimmerman, 33, has hit .217 with three doubles, two triples, five home runs, 16 RBI, nine walks and 11 runs scored in 33 games.
Benoit, 40, appeared in three Grapefruit League games before being placed on the disabled list on March 27 with a right forearm strain.
