Nats smoked out west again (Mattheus to DL; Abad, Maya coming up)

Sunday's game was pretty ugly. This one rivaled it. The Nationals dropped a 13-4 decision to the Padres on Sunday and followed that up with an 8-0 blowout loss to the Giants tonight in the first game of a three-game set. Zach Duke gets stuck with the loss after allowing four runs over 3 1/3 innings in a spot start, but he was far from the only Nationals player to underperform tonight. Craig Stammen surrendered two runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 frames. Henry Rodriguez gutted his way through two innings on 47 pitches the day after working an inning against San Diego, but he allowed two runs, three hits and three walks. Offensively, the Nats managed just three hits. Their position players went just 2-for-28. They didn't record a base knock after the fourth inning and now fall to just a game above .500. With a Braves win earlier tonight, the Nats are now 3 1/2 games out of first in the National League East. Update: It goes from bad to worse. Manager Davey Johnson told reporters after the game on MASN's "Nats Xtra" that reliever Ryan Mattheus broke his right hand yesterday when slamming his glove against his locker and will need to be placed on the disabled list. Left-handed reliever Fernando Abad and right-handed starter Yunesky Maya will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse. Outfielder Eury Perez will go back to Triple-A to make room on the Nats' 25-man roster. Mattheus has a 4.96 ERA in 16 1/3 innings this season, but his ERA was at 2.35 before he got lit up for five runs in Sunday's loss to the Padres. Abad has a 1.06 ERA in 17 innings for Syracuse, while Maya has posted a 5.07 ERA in eight starts. Maya's turn in the Syracuse rotation was due up Tuesday, so he'll be on normal rest when the Nats take on the Giants in game two of this three-game series. Abad is not currently on the Nats' 40-man roster, but the team currently has an open spot, so they can add Abad tomorrow without needing to trim someone from the 40-man.
