Ramos keeps on rolling (Nats win 8-5)

Everything's coming up Wilson Ramos. A night after posting a career-high five RBIs and hitting a game-winning three-run homer in his first game back off the DL, Ramos drove in two with a single to left, starting the Nationals scoring in a five-run second inning. Ramos missed 44 games while on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, but he's been on fire since his return. In his first 14 games this season, Ramos had six RBIs. He now is 4-for-5 with seven RBIs the last two days. Tonight's two-run single came on an 0-2 pitch that Ramos rolled over to the left side. The slow grounder was perfectly placed, however, just squeaking between the gloves of Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera and third baseman Chase Headley, and rolling into left field. One batter later, Padres starter Andrew Cashner hit Gio Gonzalez in the chest, and Denard Span followed with a two-run double to right. Bryce Harper added a sac fly later in the inning, finishing off the scoring in the second. Gonzalez didn't appear too banged up by the hit by pitch. He has given up two run-scoring hits off the bat of Headley - an RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the third - but has a 5-2 lead to work with. Update: Ramos did it again. Up with two on in the third, Ramos drilled a single to right, bringing in Adam LaRoche to boost the Nats' lead to 6-2. Ramos now is 5-for-6 with eight RBIs in the last two days. Think this guy could provide a boost? Update II: Davey Johnson came out to get Gonzalez after 6 2/3 innings of work, and two batters later, the Nats' six-run lead had been cut in half. Craig Stammen allowed a bloop double to Chris Denorfia and then surrendered a three-run homer to Carlos Quentin, an absolute bomb on a handing slider that was put on a tee for the Padres slugger. It's now an 8-5 game midway through the seventh. Gonzalez threw 50 pitches in his first two innings and allowed two baserunners in each of his first four frames, but he settled down nicely and allowed just three runs (one of which came around on the Quentin homer and was charged to Gonzalez) on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Not his best work, but a solid outing when he clearly didn't have his best stuff. Update III: That'll do it. The Nats beat the Padres 8-5, with Gonzalez getting his sixth win and Rafael Soriano notching his 23rd save. Back to two games above .500 at 44-42, with two more games against a San Diego team that has now lost seven in a row and been outscored 39-12 in that span. With the Braves' loss tonight, the Nats have cut the deficit in the NL East to five games.
