#TBT to "Nationals Classics": Clinchers, homers and a most unlikely theft

Man, I'm stuffed. How about you. That buffet dinner was no match for my Thanksgiving appetite and I'm now fueled for an evening of pre-Black Friday shopping.

Oh, wait, another piece of pumpkin pie? Well, if you insist. Don't mind if I do. The bargains will still be there when I pull into the Hagerstown Prime Outlets this evening. Hmmm, I wonder if I can get a turkey sandwich in the food court?

If you're planning on spending this evening in a food coma - and need to rest your fingers for Cyber Monday shopping - we've got a full menu of "Nationals Classics" to help occupy your holiday weekend and beyond. Clicking the remote keeps those fingers nimble, shoppers.

How about a couple of division clinchers as an appetizer? I mean, who doesn't love reliving Clinchmas?

For the main course, it's homers - a bunch of them in a short timespan. Like, blink and you'll miss the parade of Nationals round-trippers.

For dessert, an unexpected occurrence from one of the best pitchers on the planet. (Hint: It has nothing to do with his work on the mound.)

Thursday, Nov. 22, 6:30 p.m. - When the Nationals dispatched the Braves on Sept. 16, 2014, their 3-0 victory clinched their second National League East championship in three years. No, winning a division title never gets old. Tanner Roark threw seven innings of five-hit ball and Ian Desmond's two-run homer was the big blow at Turner Field.

Friday, Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m. - If you like homers, you'll love the seventh inning of the Nationals' 7-0 rout of the Marlins in Miami from April 19, 2016. The Nats went deep four times in the frame to account for all the scoring in a game when no one remembers Stephen Strasburg's 10 strikeouts. Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos had solo shots before Bryce Harper's grand slam, which was followed by a Ryan Zimmerman blast.

Monday, Nov. 26, 7 p.m. - This July 18, 2017 interleague battle between the Nats and Angels in Anaheim, Calif., pitted two of the top young stars in the game, Harper and Mike Trout. Harper went 4-for-4, outdueling Trout in a 4-3 Washington win.

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 9 a.m. - We promised you clinchers, as in plural, so you can pour a coffee and sit down with your bowl of breakfast cereal for this Sept. 24, 2016 contest, a 6-1 win over the homestanding Pirates that cinched the Nats' third NL East crown in five seasons. Harper and Stephen Drew drove in two runs each, and Reynaldo López threw 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1:30 p.m. - We've come to expect strong pitching when Max Scherzer is on the mound, and he delivered his typical effort in a 2-0 win over the Braves on April 9, 2018. Scherzer two-hit the Braves and struck out 10. But the real fun came in the seventh, when Scherzer led off with a single off Peter Moylan, then stole second, the first swipe of his 11-year career.
