A day after rookie Joe Ross was stunning while snatching his first major league win, it appears the Nationals are primed to receive the final piece of the haul resulting from last December's three-team trade with the Padres and Rays.
Highly regarded Padres shortstop prospect Trea Turner was widely known as the deal's player to be named, who would eventually join Ross with the Nationals once an antiquated Major League Baseball restriction on his departure expired.
San Diego selected Turner 12th overall out of N.C. State in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. The Padres then sent Turner and Ross, a 2011 first round pick, to Washington while the Nationals moved outfielder Steven Souza Jr. and right-hander Travis Ott to Tampa Bay. The Padres received a number of players from the Rays, most noticeably 2013 American League Rookie of the Year Wil Myers.
A rule stating that a team must wait one full year after signing a draftee before he could be dealt delayed Turner's delivery to the Nats. The one-year anniversary of Turner's signing was Saturday.
The 21-year-old Turner is seen as the eventual long-term solution at shortstop with the Nationals, who are unlikely to retain Ian Desmond when his contract expires at the end of this season.
In 58 games for Double-A San Antonio this season, Turner slashed .322/.385/.471 with a .856 OPS. He filled up the Texas League stat sheet with five homers, 13 doubles, three triples, 31 runs scored, 35 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. According to multiple reports, including this tweet from the Missions radio broadcaster,Turner will report directly to Double-A Harrisburg for the Nationals.
just found out @treavturner heading to Harrisburg tomorrow. Best of luck and thanks for the performance. Fun to watch him play

Coming into the year, Baseball America ranked Turner as baseball's 65th best prospect.
Meanwhile, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo must feel like he pulled off the daily double after Ross dazzled in just his second big league start yesterday. The 22-year-old gave the Nationals a much-needed eight innings while allowing only two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts. He set a Nationals record by waiting 51 batters into his major league career before issuing his first walk.
Update: The Nationals formally announced the completion of the trade to acquire Turner on Sunday afternoon. Turner will be assigned to Double-A Harrisburg.
"We're happy to complete this trade and add an exceptional talent to our fold," Rizzo said in a team-issued press release. "From the outset, this was a complex deal, but we thought it was one that would better our organization for the present as well as the long term. That's always our goal. We look forward to getting Trea into our minor league system."
