Zimmerman lands on DL, Nats recall Goodwin from Syracuse

His left wrist still too sore to play six days after getting hit by a pitch, Ryan Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon, with the Nationals promoting outfielder Brian Goodwin from Triple-A Syracuse to take his roster spot.

Zimmerman hadn't been able to play since taking a fastball off his left wrist in the ninth inning of Sunday's game in San Francisco. X-rays taken that day came back negative for any fractures, but the wrist was badly bruised by the pitch.

Because Zimmerman hasn't appeared in a game since suffering the injury, the Nationals were able to backdate the DL move to Aug. 1. He'll be eligible to return on Aug. 16.

Thus another disappointing chapter has been added to a frustrating season for Zimmerman, who missed 2 1/2 weeks last month with a strained ribcage muscle. The 31-year-old first baseman has appeared in 80 games this year, hitting a career-worst .222 with 12 homers, 38 RBIs and a .678 OPS.

This is Zimmerman's seventh trip to the DL in the last six seasons.

Goodwin will be making his major league debut five years after the Nationals drafted him 34th overall in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, a compensatory pick after they lost Adam Dunn to free agency.

The 25-year-old outfielder's progression was slow through the early portion of his professional career, but he broke through this season at Syracuse, hitting .284 with 11 homers, 62 RBIs, a .350 on-base percentage and .784 OPS in 109 games.
