Zimmermann overpowers Mets, Werth goes yard (Nationals win 3-2)

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Apparently Jerry Seinfeld is here at Digital Domain Park today, watching his Mets take on the Nationals. Think the bosses at MASN will care if I just wander the stands for the rest of the afternoon hoping to bump into Seinfeld? Keep my plan on the down-low, please. Jordan Zimmermann has just walked off the mound after dominating the Mets, allowing just two hits over six scoreless frames. The righty didn't walk anyone, faced only one over the minimum and struck out two in a stellar outing. He threw just 68 pitches in his six innings, 47 for strikes. Ironically, manager Davey Johnson probably hoped that Zimmermann had a little more trouble retiring the Mets, forcing him to throw more pitches. The Nats had hoped to have Zimmermann get around 85 pitches today, but he was just too efficient. That's what you call one of those good problems. Zimmermann is the first Nationals pitcher to work into the sixth inning this spring. Tom Gorzelanny will take over for him in the seventh. Jayson Werth hit his fourth homer of spring today - an absolute laser which flew over the left-field wall on a line. The right-handed hitter, who will probably be the Nats' cleanup hitter to start the season with Michael Morse likely to start on the DL, has seven extra-base hits in 38 at-bats this spring. Xavier Nady is now 1-for-3 today after ripping a single to center in the seventh. He struck out in his first two at-bats today - one swinging, one looking. Update: The Nationals defeated the Mets 3-2.
