A closer look at Jimmy Paredes and other notes from the weekend

The second time around as an Oriole is so far proving to be the charm for Jimmy Paredes.

The first time lasted two days. Do we even count that?

On February 15, 2014 the Orioles selected Paredes off waivers from Miami. Two days later, needing to open a 40-man roster spot for pitcher Suk-min Yoon, the Orioles designated Paredes for assignment and he was claimed off waivers by Kansas City.

But then, in a cash-only transaction, the Orioles got him back, purchasing his contract from the Royals last July 24.

Paredes just had a huge series against Boston. He went 8-for-15 with two doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBIs. He is batting .429 for the season.

Since they got Parades from Kansas City, he has played in 26 games for the Orioles in 2014 and 2015 and is batting .352 with eight doubles, a triple, five homers and 17 RBIs.

"It's amazing watching that guy. He can swing the bat," Steve Pearce said Sunday after the O's 18-7 win over Boston. "Hope he keeps it rolling. He could hit in the top of the order or the middle of the lineup. He can do some damage with the bat."

The Red Sox saw that this weekend and Parades is now slugging .857 with an OPS of 1.302 in eight games this season.

Chris Davis and Delmon Young also had huge series at the plate against Boston. Davis went 5-for-11 with two homers, five runs and six RBIs and he struck out just once in the series. Young, who drove in five runs Sunday, went 7-for-14 in the three games and is batting .448 (13-for-29) over his last eight games.

Did the Orioles show yet again how resilient they are over the weekend, bouncing back to win Saturday and Sunday after a tough loss on Friday night?

"We have tough losses all year and the year before," Young said. "We're professionals. That is what we get paid to do. Try to come out the next day and win a ballgame."

The O's batted .360 in the weekend series with 41 hits, including eight doubles, two triples and five homers.

After O's starting pitchers went six innings or more just four times in the season's first 16 games, they did it three times in three games against Boston. The starters' ERA was 3.92 in 20 2/3 innings against the Sox.

The series drew a combined attendance of 117,918 for an average of 39,306.

Final note from the weekend series: The Red Sox have already signed pitchers Rick Porcello and Wade Miley to combined contract extensions of $101.5 million. Porcello has an ERA of 9.82 this year against the Orioles and Miley has an ERA of 23.14. The Boston rotation ERA of 5.75 ranks last in the majors.
