A look at close Orioles-Blue Jays games, plus plenty of other notes

TORONTO - The Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays played yet another close game last night. The Orioles trailed and won on Thursday night. Toronto trailed 3-2 and won 4-3 in 10 innings last night.

Edwin Encarnacion's fifth career walk-off homer gave the Blue Jays the victory, sending most of the crowd of 44,439 home happy. Orioles right-hander Brad Brach gave up just his second homer of the year over 33 1/3 innings.

The Orioles bullpen had a run of 16 2/3 scoreless innings over the past six games end with the opposite-field home run. O's pitching had a streak of six consecutive games without allowing a homer end, as they gave up two last night.

In April in Baltimore, the Orioles lost 4-3 to Toronto and then beat Toronto by 4-3 in 10 innings and 3-2. The O's won 6-5 Thursday and lost 4-3 last night. Five games and five one-run games between the last two American League East division champions.

Buck Showalter said we may see more of this between these teams.

"We know they are going to be competitive," he said. "We're just trying to stay up with them. Obviously, on paper, they're a really good team. Coming off a good year and they will be (good) again. I don't think there are any doubts that they will be in it all the way. Played them tough again at their place and we'll turn it around and do it real quick (today) again."

More notes on the Orioles and Blue Jays:

* The Orioles are 14-9 versus the American League East and Toronto is 20-17. The O's are 12-13 on the road and Toronto is 15-15 at home.

* Chris Davis has homered in each of the last three games. He is 4-for-10 in that stretch with three homers and six RBIs. This is the first time this season he has homered in two or more consecutive games. In 25 road games, Davis is batting .277 with eight homers, 22 RBIs, a .584 slugging percentage and an OPS of .932.

* Toronto's Michael Saunders homered in the fourth inning last night. That ended a 26-inning stretch by the Blue Jays without a homer off O's pitching. In the season series this year, the Orioles have hit six homers to Toronto's three.

* Toronto right-hander Marco Estrada recorded Toronto's 41st quality start last night. That is tied for first in the majors with Texas and the Chicago Cubs. The Orioles have 25 quality starts.

* Estrada gave up his sixth career home run on an 0-2 pitch when Jonathan Schoop connected against him in the fifth inning. The last time he yielded an 0-2 homer was to Miami's Giancarlo Stanton on May 23, 2014.

* O's starting pitchers have an ERA of 2.17 with four quality starts over the past six games.

* Catcher Matt Wieters is 0-for-10 his last three games. But over a longer stretch, he is batting .313 (21-for-67) his last 18 games with three homers and 15 RBIs. Wieters has nine RBIs over his last eight games and 25 at-bats.

* Kevin Gausman has thrown a career-high five straight games with 100 or more pitches. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his five career starts versus Toronto. Gausman is 0-1 with an ERA of 3.48 in five home starts and 0-2 with an ERA of 3.41 in five road starts.

* Orioles pitchers have already made 10 errors, matching their total from all of last year. Tyler Wilson has made three errors, while Ubaldo Jimenez and Gausman have two each. Ashur Tolliver, Chris Tillman and Mike Wright have each made one error.
