A look at Matt Harvey's Orioles debut (O's are 2-0)

They will want him to get deeper into the games, but besides that, right-hander Matt Harvey did a lot right in his Orioles debut today. He kept his team in the game, even though he didn't get a decision.

Harvey gave up two runs over 4 2/3 innings in his official club debut this afternoon at Fenway Park. The Orioles pulled out a 4-2 win over the Red Sox to win this series and produce a 2-0 start.

New Birds pitcher Adam Plutko had a strong relief outing. He kept Boston off the board over 2 1/3 innings, from the last out of the fifth through the seventh. He was the winning pitcher.

Maikel Franco's two-run single in the fourth broke the scoreless tie and the Orioles never trailed. Anthony Santander's infield single scored a run in the fifth and Trey Mancini's sac fly in the seventh scored their fourth run.

Harvey, meanwhile, kept Boston off the board on 53 pitches through the third. The Red Sox got single runs off him in the fourth and fifth and he was replaced by Plutko with two down in the Boston fifth.

He needed 20 pitches to navigate the first, allowing a two-out double to J.D. Martinez. After a Marwin Gonzalez one-out single in the second, he retired five in a row through the third.

Down 2-0, Boston scored off Harvey in the fourth. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts singled to start the inning and both moved up on a groundout. Gonzalez produced a sac fly to right for a 2-1 game.

With the O's leading 3-1 in the fifth, Boston scored one more time. With two on and two outs, Martinez came through again with a hard smash up the middle that deflected off Harvey and kicked toward the right side of the infield. It scored a runner from second and the O's lead was trimmed to 3-2.

But Plutko then came on and got a big last out when O's third baseman Franco made a nice play on a hard-hit ball down the third-base line by Bogaerts.

Harvey allowed six hits, he walked one and fanned four, throwing 52 of 86 pitches for strikes. He gets a no-decision, but he kept his team in the game and gets mostly solid grades for the first "Harvey day" with the Orioles.

* Boston went scoreless against Harvey for the first three innings today. Through their first 12 innings in this series, Boston batters were 4-for-40 (.100).

* Pedro Severino had a bloop single and double to left his first two times up today to begin his year going 4-for-6. But he struck out his last two times up.

* The Orioles struck out six times in the first three innings against Boston rookie right-hander Tanner Houck. He threw 46 pitches in those innings, touching 95 and 96 mph with his fastball. The O's swung 19 times at his pitches and whiffed nine times in those innings.

* Martinez went 3-for-4 for Boston, but Dillon Tate struck him out in the eighth as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning on 11 pitches.

* The Orioles went 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position, and three of their four runs scored with two outs.

* Boston has not led or been tied during the first two games.

* Before the game, O's manager Brandon Hyde said he preferred not to pitch Tanner Scott or César Valdez two days in a row. But he brought Valdez in for the ninth, up by two. And he got into immediate trouble with a hit-by-pitch and a walk. He would fall behind the next hitter 3-1, but he struck out Franchy Cordero. A fly out and groundout followed to wrap up a win.
