A look at some free agent outfielders that could be on O's radar

The Orioles currently have seven outfielders on their 40-man roster, but only one - Adam Jones - that we know will be an everyday player next year. The others on the 40-man are Dariel Alvarez, L.J. Hoes, Junior Lake, David Lough, Nolan Reimold and Henry Urrutia.

We know the Orioles are in the market for corner outfield help to play on either side of Jones. Will they sign or trade for one outfielder? Will they look to add two players there?

MLBTradeRumors.com rated four free agent outfielders among the top nine overall available free agents. Jason Heyward was ranked No. 2, Justin Upton No. 4, Yoenis Cespedes No. 6 and Alex Gordon No. 9. Those first three are projected to get contracts worth at least $140 million each, Gordon is predicted to get a five-year deal worth $105 million.

Where will the Orioles go in search of outfield help?

Alex Gordon: Gordon turns 32 in February. He has appeared in three straight All-Star games and is a four-time Gold Glove winner. He would bring the Orioles one thing they already covet in great defense and one they sorely need in on-base capability. He had a .377 OBP last year with Kansas City and has a career .348 OBP. He has never been a big homer hitter, with a career-high of 23, and the team signing him will lose a draft pick.

Dexter Fowler: A switch-hitter and leadoff batter, Fowler played center field for the Cubs last year and hit .250 with a .346 OBP. He scored 102 runs and stole 20 bases. Fowler, who turns 30 in March, has a career .363 OBP. Last season, he hit .326 against left-handed pitching, but just .228 against right-handers. A team signing Fowler will lose a draft pick.

Ben Zobrist: Zobrist has plenty of experience in the American League East from his time with Tampa Bay and has produced 34 or more doubles for five straight years and an .800 or better OPS in three of the five seasons. Last year for Oakland and Kansas City, he hit .276/.359/.450 with 13 homers and 56 RBIs. Age is a factor here. He turns 35 in May.

Denard Span: This left-handed batter was limited to 61 games for the Nationals in 2015 producing a slash line of .301/.365/.431. In a full 2014 season, he hit .302/.355/.416 with 39 doubles, eight triples, five homers, 37 RBIs, 31 steals and 94 runs. Span underwent hernia and core muscle surgery last winter and then hip surgery on Sept. 1. He could be the top-of-the-order hitter the Orioles need, but there is that injury history from last year. He turns 32 in February.
