A look at the Orioles' two Dominican Summer League teams (Frederick's All-Stars)

For the second year in a row, the Orioles are again fielding two teams in the Dominican Summer League. Teams began play in that league on Saturday and the regular season will end on Aug. 23. The Orioles, Rangers, Yankees and Mets are the four other organizations fielding two DSL teams. The players on the teams are from eight different countries. They represent the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, Curacao, Guatemala, and the Netherlands. The DSL is a short-season league and basically an entry level version into pro baseball for young international players. Jonathan Schoop started his pro career in the DSL in 2009 and Eduardo Rodriguez pitched there in 2010. Those international players are now among the O's top young prospects. The teams are being managed by Elvis Morel and Nelson Norman, the club's director of Dominican Republic baseball operations. They will be assisted by pitching coaches Robert Perez and Dionis Pascual and coaches Benny Adames (hitting), Ramon Caraballo (field supervisor), Ramon Lubo (catching) and Ruben Francisco (field coach). Ludovino Marte will serve as athletic trainer for the DSL clubs. The O's DSL-1 team is off to a 3-0 start with a 2.33 team ERA and the club's pitchers have walked just two with 32 strikeouts through 27 innings. The O's DSL-2 team is 2-1 with a team ERA of 1.73. Over 26 innings, their pitchers have walked just five with 22 strikeouts. Some players to watch: * Ofelky Peralta a 17-year-old right-hander that was signed by Fred Ferreira to a $325,000 bonus last September. The hard-throwing Peralta is already ranked by Baseball America as the organization's 22nd best prospect and his fastball touched 97 mph at instructional league. In his pro debut yesterday he started and went 3 2/3 innings allowing two hits and one run. * Cristian Alvarado, a 19-year-old right-hander from Venezuela. Last season in the DSL he went 1-7 with a 4.10 ERA. In 59 innings he walked 12 and struck out 69. In his first start this year he pitched six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. * Wendell Floranus, a 19-year-old right-hander from Curacao. In 2013 he went 3-3 with a 1.51 ERA. In 77 innings he walked 18 with 43 strikeouts. * Francisco Jimenez, a 19-year-old right-hander from the Dominican. He went 4-4 with an ERA of 1.60 last summer. Over 67 innings, he walked 19 and fanned 63. In his first outing Saturday he pitched six scoreless innings on one hit with four strikeouts. * Yeizer Marrugo, a 19-year-old right-hander from Colombia. In 2013 he was 3-4 with an ERA of 1.68. In 59 innings he walked 29 with 29 strikeouts. * Carlos Diaz, the 17-year-old first baseman from Mexico. He is just beginning his career after the Orioles announced his acquisition on Jan. 30. In his first two games, Diaz is 1-for-7 with a double, two RBIs and two walks. * Rachid Engelhardt, an 18-year-old second baseman/outfielder from the the Netherlands who is just beginning his career. He went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs in his first game. * Yeridolfo Lizardo, a 20-year-old third baseman from the Dominican. From San Pedro de Macoris, he hit .200 in 11 games last summer, but missed most of last year with a fractured hand. * Guillermo Salas, a 20-year-old shortstop from Venezuela. He hit .252 in 70 DSL games in 2013. In three games so far the switch-hitter is 5-for-10 with a triple, RBI and four runs scored.
