A look at the Orioles' winning ways against Boston

There once was a time when the Orioles lost to the Red Sox - a lot. Things are different now. A win by the Orioles in one of the next two games would give them the series win in five of the last six series against Boston. The Orioles lead the season series this year 7-3 and have won 10 of their last 14, and 13 of the last 17 games versus the Red Sox. That is a 13-4 run against the same club that the Orioles went 2-16 against in 2009. It's a new day, indeed. There are eight games left in the season series. If the Orioles go 3-5 in those contests, they will win the season series against Boston for the first time since going 10-9 in 2004. Believe it or not, the Orioles have won the season series against this team just one time since 1996. Many years, the season series was close or tied, but the O's won more than they lost just that one year since 1996. The first time the Orioles played the Red Sox this year, they swept a three-game series at Fenway Park - and who can forget the series finale and the 17-inning May 6 win with Chris Davis on the mound and Adam Jones homering off Darnell McDonald? That was the O's first three-game sweep at Fenway since June 10-12, 1994. The Orioles won three straight series from Sept. 19, 2011-May 6, 2012 for the first time since Sept. 17, 1990-June 30, 1991. Since the benches-clearing brawl in Boston on July 7, 2011, the O's are 13-9 against the Sox. I digress, but how about this stat: The Orioles are a combined 9-3 this year at Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium. No player is enjoying these games more than Mark Reynolds. He hit two homers last night and he was 6-for-11 with two homers and six RBIs in that series at Boston in May. This year against Boston, Reynolds is 10-for-23 (.435) with three doubles, four homers and 11 RBIs. His slugging percentage is 1.087 and his OPS is 1.649. The Orioles have had their share of losses against Boston over the years. But the tables are turning now.
