For the Orioles, it was another good day at Fenway Park. For outfielder Adam Jones, it was another good day at the plate.
Jones had four hits, including a homer, and drove in five runs to tie his career high as the Orioles beat Boston 8-3 for their seventh win in their last eight games at Fenway.
The Orioles and Red Sox are both now 7-5 and tied for first in the American League East.
With the game tied 3-3 in the fifth, the Orioles scored twice to go ahead by two runs. Jimmy Paredes and Jones singled to start the rally and later Travis Snider's infield single with the bases loaded made it 4-3. Manny Machado followed with a sac fly.
In the sixth, the Orioles loaded the bases for the third inning in a row. Jones unloaded them on a booming three-run double to center. He also hit a two-run homer in the first inning, giving him a five-RBI day for the third time in his career.
Jones has 14 RBIs over his last nine games and 16 for the season. Today was already his sixth multi-RBI game on the year.
During a nine-game batting streak, Jones is batting .571 (20-for-35) with five homers and 14 RBIs. He is batting .457 on the seaason, beginning at .415 to rank sixth-best in the majors.
His homer in the first was his fifth of the year and provided the Orioles a 2-0 lead that didn't last long. Hanley Ramirez hit a three-run shot off Miguel Gonzalez in the last of the first. Ryan Flaherty's solo homer in the second inning tied it 3-3.
After giving up just two runs over 12 2/3 innings in his first two starts, today Gonzalez went five innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He threw 96 pitches, with 35 coming in the first inning. He improved to 2-1 with an ERA of 2.55.
In seven career starts against Boston, Gonzalez is 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA. In 16 starts since last July 1, he is 8-5 with an ERA of 2.17.
Rick Porcello, who signed a four-year contract extension worth $82.5 million earlier this month, took the loss. He gave up eight runs and 12 hits over five innings, and is 1-2 with a 6.63 ERA.
The Orioles had 15 hits to tie a season high after producing 13 yesterday. Parades went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Machado and Flaherty had two hits, and four Orioles drove in runs. Their eight runs are a season high.
The Orioles are 43-25 against Boston since July 19, 2011. They are 24-11 in Fenway Park over that stretch and 9-4 there since the start of last season.
In the Patriots' Day series finale Monday at 11:05 a.m., Wei-Yin Chen (0-0, 4.35 ERA) faces Justin Masterson (1-0, 7.59 ERA).
