Ryan Adams was officially recalled today and immediately placed in the starting lineup at second base.
Adams didn't waste any time making sure he got noticed. His single into center field in the top of the third inning gave the Orioles a short-lived 1-0 lead against Twins right-hander Carl Pavano.
The Twins scored the tying run in the bottom half of the inning against left-hander Zach Britton, who officially came off the disabled list today.
Manager Buck Showalter told reporters in MInnesota that Adams "is going to get an opportunity."
"We've got good reports on him down there. He's swung the bat well and I'm going to run him out there and see how he does."
So far, so good.
(Pardon the interruption, but my commercial is airing on MASN2 and I need to check whether I'm still known as "The Professor of Posts." Yes ... yes I am.)
Adams was hitting .283 with 28 doubles, three triples, 10 homers and 37 RBIs in 93 games with Triple-A Norfolk. He went 5-for-23 with an RBI in nine games with the Orioles earlier this season, and his long stretches on the bench irritated plenty of fans.
It looks like he'll get an extended look over the last six weeks.
Meanwhile, Robert Andino looks a lot better at third base than Blake Davis. And I'm not knocking Davis. He's been trying to adapt to a bunch of different positions. He's supposed to be a shortstop.
Instant update: J.J. Hardy homered in the fifth to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. I'm convinced that his left ankle is still bothering him, but it's easier to trot around the bases.
That's 24 home runs and 60 RBIs for Hardy.
Update II: Matt Wieters just hit his second homer in two days, a towering drive to right field, to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead in the sixth.
Zach Britton escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the fifth by getting a called third strike on Jim Thome.
Britton appeared to hurt himself after fielding a comebacker and starting a double play. He gave up a double to the next batter he faced, and head athletic trainer Richie Bancells went to the mound. Britton threw a few warmup pitches and stayed in the game.
