Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy will work out Friday at Double-A Bowie, but he still hasn't been cleared to play in any games.
Hardy's status remains day-to-day. He took live batting practice at Camden Yards and is nearing a return, but he needs to get full extension on his swing without feeling a twinge in his left shoulder.
Hardy is able to take ground balls and throw. Batting has been the final hurdle, and he's progressed from dry swings with a fungo bat to coach toss, hitting off a tee and stepping into the cage.
Everth Cabrera has received the majority of starts at shortstop in Hardy's absence.
The Orioles placed Hardy on the disabled list retroactive to March 27, with a strained muscle in his left shoulder. He was eligible to return on April 11.
Catcher J.P. Arencibia, who was in camp with the Orioles this spring, has signed a minor league deal with the Rays.
Arencibia went 2-for-17 in exhibition games and was charged with four passed balls. He had to be shut down with a strained right flexor mass, and the Orioles released him last week after reassigning him to minor league camp.
Single-A Frederick catcher Chance Sisco and outfielder Josh Hart were placed on the seven-day disabled list today. Catcher Steel Russell and outfielder Anthony Hewitt were activated.
Sisco sustained a slight fracture on his right ring finger after being hit by an opponent's bat. Hart injured his right shoulder diving for a ball. Both players are expected to be ready within the seven days.
Chris Parmelee homered again last night for Triple-A Norfolk. He's hit safely in six of seven games and is batting .357 (10-for-27) with two home runs, eight RBIs and a .643 slugging percentage.
Left-hander T.J. McFarland is starting tonight in Durham.
Update: Hardy didn't take batting practice today at Camden Yards. The Orioles wanted him to rest after yesterday's session, a sign that the discomfort hasn't completely left his shoulder.
Infielder Jimmy Paredes will play Friday at Bowie and Saturday at Norfolk. He can stay on his rehab assignment for a maximum of 20 days.
