A look at the Orioles' draft today through round 40

After selecting just two pitchers in 11 picks in the first two days of the draft, the Orioles went very heavy on college pitchers when the final day of the draft resumed at noon today.

With their 20 selections so far this afternoon in rounds 11-30 they drafted 13 college right-handed pitchers and two college lefties. They added a first baseman, third baseman, two center fielders and one player just listed as an infielder. All 20 picks so far today have come from college. So through round 30, the Orioles made 31 picks with 29 coming from the collegiate ranks.

Here is the list of all players selected today with some notes and stats on some of the players. They are listed by round and overall selection number. This entry will be updated after the draft ends with round 40 today.

It now has been updated through the end of the draft with round 40. The final picks have been added with final notes later in this entry.

* Round 11 (318) - 1B Andrew Daschback, Stanford

Daschback played in 57 games this year, batting .300/.396/.626 with 11 doubles, two triples, 17 homers and 45 RBIs. The product of Atherton, California hit 17 homers with 63 RBIs in 2018 for Stanford.

Baseball America says: Daschbach's impressive power also played with a wood bat, as he hit .306/.424/.515 with five home runs in 40 games in the Cape Cod League last summer. What limits Daschbach is his defensive profile. He's played third base in the past, but a lack of quickness moved him to first base, where he's serviceable. It's a bat-only profile, and scouts think Daschbach's swing relies more on strength than bat speed. Regardless, he's produced against high-level competition for long stints throughout his college career.

* Round 12 (348) - RHP Kade Strowd, West Virginia Univ.

Strowd went 5-6 with a 4.73 ERA this year for the Mountaineers. Over 83 2/3 innings he gave up 67 hits with 59 walks and 87 strikeouts. He allowed a .218 batting average against. In 2018 he was 4-7 with a 5.74 ERA.

This year Hammer went 3-8 with a 6.55 ERA in 17 games, 13 starts. Over 66 innings he allowed 85 hits with 37 walks, 70 strikeouts and a .310 average against. He is rated No. 163 on Baseball America's top 500 prospects list.

Baseball America says: His best performance actually came last summer in the Cape Cod League, where Hammer started three games and relieved three, posting a 2.16 ERA in 25 innings with 20 strikeouts and just five walks. While there, he showed better command of a changeup and sharp breaking ball than he has this spring. Scouts like Hammer's pure stuff, headlined by a solid-average fastball in the low 90s and an in-between breaking ball that could be a plus offering. He also has a changeup that some scouts think is a plus pitch as well.

* Round 14 (408) - CF Mason Janvrin, Univ. of Central Missouri

Janvrin played in 59 games this season and batted .423/.467/.558 with 14 doubles, three triples, five homers, 36 steals in 44 attempts, 73 runs and 49 RBIs. As a sophomore in 2018 he hit .367 and stole 32 bases.

* Round 15 (438) - RHP Kyle Martin, Fordham Univ.

Martin pitched in 30 games, all in relief and went 6-2 with a 2.44 ERA and 10 saves. In 44 1/3 innings he gave up 32 hits with 11 walks, 65 strikeouts and a .198 average against. In 2018 he posted a 1.62 ERA with 10 saves and 56 strikeouts over 39 innings.

* Round 16 (468) - RHP Shelton Perkins, James Madison

This season he went 3-1 with a 2.96 ERA in 22 games, all in relief. Over 45 2/3 innings, he gave up 27 hits with 16 walks, 72 strikeouts, an 0.95 WHIP and average against of .169.

* Round 17 (498) - RHP Morgan McSweeney, Wake Forest

In 2019 he made 14 appearances, 11 starts for the Demon Deacons and was 3-3 with a 7.64 ERA. Over 50 2/3 innings he allowed 69 hits with 36 walks and 40 strikeouts.

* Round 18 (528) - RHP Malachi Emond, New Mexico
* Round 19 (558) - RHP Jensen Elliott, Oklahoma State

Elliott missed most of the 2017-18 seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April of 2017. He was a freshman All-American on the 2016 OSU team that advanced to the college World Series. This year he went 10-3 with a 3.33 ERA along with 33 walks and 60 strikeouts in 94 2/3 innings.

* Round 20 (588) - RHP Clayton McGinness, Wichita State
* Round 21 (618) - 3B Toby Welk, Penn State Berks

Welk was one of the top players in Division 3 this year, batting .483 with 13 homers and 58 RBIs. He led the nation in D3 by slugging .938.

Roth went 10-0 with an ERA of 1.93 and fanned 98 over 84 innings.

* Round 27 (798) - LHP Dillon McCollough, Eckerd (Fla.) college

His selection ends a run where the first 13 pitchers the Orioles had selected in this draft were all right-handed.

* Round 28 (828) - RHP Jonathan Pendergast, Pepperdine
* Round 29 (858) - RHP Houston Roth, Univ. of Mississippi
* Round 30 (888) - LHP Dalton Stambaugh, Morehead State (Ky.)
* Round 31 (918) - LHP Jake Prizina, Seattle Univ.
* Round 32 (948) - C Harris Yett, UNC-Charlotte
* Round 33 (978) - OF Craig Lewis, Seton Hill Univ. (Pa.)
* Round 34 (1008) - IF Zachary Arnold, Great Oak (Calif) HS

He is just the third high school player taken by the O's in the draft to this point.

* Round 35 (1038) - C Justin Miknis, Dubois Central Christian (Pa) HS
* Round 36 (1068) - OF Trevor Kehe, Colorado School of Mines

Final draft notes: The Orioles drafted college players with 32 of their first 34 picks. Their third high school selection came in Round 34, then they took prep players with six of the last seven picks.

So the Orioles made 41 selections with 33 from college and eight from high schools. They selected 16 right-handed pitchers, three left-handed pitchers, six catchers, seven infielders and nine outfielders. They drafted just one high school pitcher and that was in round 38.

In 2018 the O's selected 10 high school players, in 2017 they drafted 11 with 10 in 2016 and 12 in 2015. In that 2015 draft they selected high school players with seven of their first nine picks, drafting such players out of the prep ranks as Ryan Mountcastle, Ryan McKenna, Gray Fenter and Seamus Curran.

Brotherly love note: In the 22nd round today, the Kansas City Royals selected Jake Means, third baseman from Indiana State. He is the younger brother of O's lefty John Means.
