Andrew Cashner takes loss as Philadelphia beats O's 4-1

A strong outing for Orioles right-hander Andrew Cashner started to unravel a bit in the top of the sixth. But it stayed strong throughout this afternoon for Philadelphia right-hander Nick Pivetta as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Orioles 4-1 at drizzly and rainy Camden Yards.

The Orioles fall to 13-29 and they wrapped up this homestand going 5-3. They are 10-13 at home but lost today for the 23rd time in their past 32 games.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the home first. Outscored 58-17 in the opening inning for the season, they got one of those back this afternoon as Adam Jones homered to center field for the lead. Jones hit an 0-1 fastball from Pivetta. It was his seventh homer and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Jones' homer had an exit velocity of 104 mph and the ball went 422 feet.

Cashner pitched scoreless ball over the first five innings with six strikeouts on 73 pitches. But the Phillies tied it, then went ahead, in the top of the sixth. Leadoff hitter César Hernández led off the inning with a homer for the 1-1 tie. He hit a first pitch changeup that just got over the right-field wall at 358 feet. That was No. 5 for Hernandez.

However, the Phillies were not done scoring and they knocked Casher from the game in the sixth after he got the next two batters out, following the homer. But he walked Carlos Santana, Nick Williams singled him to third, and an RBI single by Maikel Franco put Philadelphia ahead 2-1 and ended his day. Pedro Florimòn's RBI single off Richard Bleier extended the lead to 3-1.

Cashner went 5 2/3 allowing five hits and three runs with three walks and six strikeouts. He took the loss to fall to 1-5 with an ERA of 4.83 and the Orioles are now 2-7 over his nine starts.

The Phillies added to that lead in the seventh when Hernandez tripled off Bleier and Rhys Hoskins doubled off Mychal Givens to make it a 4-1 game.

Pivetta had a strong day, throwing 94 mph fastballs along with some nasty sliders and curveballs. Over seven innings, he allowed just two hits and one run, with one walk and 11 strikeouts. The 11 strikeouts fanned matched his career-high. He improved to 3-2 with an ERA of 3.72.

Over his past 12 starts - dating to last Sept. 18 - he is 6-2 with an ERA of 3.00 and 72 strikeouts in 63 innings. He threw 99 pitches today, getting 23 swings and misses.

Starting tomorrow night the Orioles begin a three-city, 11-game road trip in Boston. The Orioles are 3-16 on the road with 12 straight losses. Right-hander Kevin Gausman (3-2, 3.18 ERA) faces lefty David Price (3-4, 4.89 ERA) at 7:10 p.m.
