Angels come up with big fifth inning to beat the Orioles

For four innings tonight, it looked like Jake Arrieta was pitching with some dominant stuff in Anaheim. But then he failed to make it through the last of the fifth inning. Matt Wieters gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead on a home run, getting a green light on a 3-0 pitch from Jered Weaver in the top of the fifth, but then Los Angeles scored five in its half against Arrieta on the way to a 6-3 win to take the first two games of this series. This means the Orioles will not win all three series on a three-city road trip for the first time since August 1998. They fall to 8-7 on the year and 5-4 with one game left on the trip. Weaver (3-0) pitched a complete-game five-hitter. He is 12-0 over his last 15 starts in March and April since 2010. Arrieta had a one-hit shutout and had retired 12 batters in a row heading into that fifth inning before giving up the runs on five singles, three walks, a wild pitch and his own error. Matt Lindstrom got out of a bases-loaded jam when he came on in relief to keep Arrieta's line from being worse. Arrieta gave up six hits and five runs over 4 1/3 innings to fall to 1-1 with an ERA of 4.01. It was the second shortest outing by an O's starter so far and is the 10th time in the last 12 games that the Orioles did not get a quality start. The Orioles made three more errors tonight and now have six in this series and 15 on the road trip. Their 19 errors on the year lead the American League. Wieters added an RBI groundout in the seventh for a three-RBI night. Adam Jones went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. In the series finale on Sunday at 3:35 p.m. eastern time, Wei-Yin Chen (1-0, 3.27 ERA) pitches against Dan Haren (0-1, 4.76 ERA).
