Angels score early against Hammel (O's lead 8-4)

Adam Jones came up with another hit with a runner in scoring position today as the Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against the Angels. But the Amgels scored three times with two outs off Jason Hammel to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Trout reached on a one-out infield single and then stole second base. But MASN slo-mo replays showed that Matt Wieters' throw was just in time even though Trout was ruled safe. Trout would score on the first of three straight two-out singles against Hammel by Alberto Callaspo, Howie Kendrick and Hank Conger. After the Conger single, Hammel walked Chris Iannetta to load the bases but then struck out J.B Shuck to finally end the long inning. He actually struck out the side in the first. Hammel, who threw pitches 38 pitches in the frame, had allowed just three first inning runs in his first six starts on the year. After going hitless Saturday, Nate McLouth led off the game with a double to left off Jerome Williams. Two outs later, Jones smoked a 1-2 slider to the gap in left center for a double and 1-0 lead and his 22nd RBI. With his double, McLouth has now reached base in 27 of his last 56 plate appearances. With that hit, Jones is now batting .406 on the year with RISP and he is 7-for-16 (.438) with RISP and two outs. A win today would give the O's a series victory at Anaheim and a 7-4 road trip. Kevin Gausman's outing for Double-A Bowie today at Akron is over. He went seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs (both earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. He now has an ERA of 3.53 on the season and an ERA of 1.83 over his past three starts. Updated: J.J. Hardy hit his fifth homer, a two-run shot in the fourth, to tie this game at 3-3. It was Hardy's second homer in the last two games of this series and he now has 18 RBIs. It ended a run of 37 2/3 consecutive innings by Williams without allowing a homer. That tie didn't last long as Trout's solo homer in the last of the fourth put Los Angeles back ahead, 4-3. Meanwhile, another Bowie note. Henry Urrutia had a double in their loss today at Akron. In that three-game series, he went 6-for-12 with four homers and four RBIs and is now batting .327. Manny answers Trout: Well, Bryce Harper isn't playing in this game, but now Manny Machado and Trout have both homered. After Trout's blast put the Angels ahead 4-3, Machado smoked a two-run homer to left in the fifth to give the O's a 5-4 lead. Over his last 14 games, counting today, Machado is batting .390 (23-for-59) with seven doubles, a triple, three homers and 10 RBIs. That was his third homer in the last five games and fifth on the season. Hammel goes six: Hammel was at 69 pitches after just three innings but was able to pitch the next three innings on just 38 pitches. Brian Matusz comes on to start the last of the seventh with a 5-4 O's lead. Hammel gave up nine hits and four runs with three walks and five strikeouts, throwing 107 total pitches. He can get the win today if the O's hold the lead. Update: The Orioles scored three runs in the 8th to bring the score to 8-4. Chris Davis drove in Machado with a single and Ryan Flaherty drove in Davis and Wieters with a two-RBI single.
