Another O's starter hit hard in loss to Yankees

When Giancarlo Stanton mashed a baseball at 119 mph in the top of the first inning tonight, that was incredibly impressive exit velocity. But the grounder to third was deftly fielded to his left by Orioles third baseman Maikel Franco and he turned it into a 5-4-3 double play.

But before long, some other hard-hit balls off O's starter Dean Kremer would not be turned into outs.

For the second straight night, Yankees batters teed off on a young O's starter. It was lefty Bruce Zimmermann last night and right-hander Kremer tonight as the Yankees beat the Orioles 7-0 at Oriole Park.

Last night, the average exit velocity off Zimmermann was 97.8 mph with a top of 119 mph. Tonight, the average exit velocity off Kremer was 97.8 mph with a top of 119 mph. Yep, the same - and similar results, too.

Kremer, who was recalled from the alternate site to start today, allowed a solo homer to Mike Ford in the second inning and a three-run shot in the third to Gio Urshela. New York scored four in the third to lead 5-0.

Kremer gave up 10 hits and six runs over 4 1/3 innings with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 89 pitches and falls to 0-2 with an ERA of 8.40. Yankees hitters went 10-for-22 against him.

The last two nights versus O's starters, New York batters went 19-for-41 with four doubles and four home runs.

It makes Matt Harvey's outing Monday look that much better, when he held New York to three hits and one run over six innings and Yankees batters went 3-for-19.

* Trey Mancini went 2-for-4 tonight with a pair of singles. His single in the seventh was his 499th career hit. And his single in the ninth was No. 500. He is sitting on 90 career home runs.

* The Yankees have had five-run leads in three games this year and all three have come against the Orioles.

* The Orioles have scored just 11 runs in going 2-4 versus the Yankees in 2021.

* Pedro Severino's line drive single off winning pitcher Domingo Germán in the Baltimore seventh was hit 113.4 mph, making it the hardest-hit ball by an Oriole this year. Anthony Santander comes next with a ball he hit at 112.6 mph.

* The Orioles were shut out for the third time. Earlier they lost 7-0 to the Yankees on April 5 and 1-0 at Texas on April 18.

* The O's are now 1-12 when scoring three runs or less.

* The O's bullpen allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings. That reduced the season ERA for the 'pen from 3.00 to 2.95.
