Another day brings another roster move

The Orioles are poised to make another roster move after using seven relievers in yesterday's doubleheader against the White Sox.

Are they really poised to face their third opponent in three days?

The Orioles beat the Astros on Wednesday to take the series and split with the White Sox yesterday. The Rays are in town for a three-game series because the Orioles simply don't play them enough.

As for the roster, the Orioles had a pitcher nearby in case Tyler Wilson made a hasty exit in his first major league start. Wilson was up to the challenge, allowing two runs in six innings.

The second rookie starter, Mike Wright, lasted only five innings in Game 2. Oliver Drake, Brad Brach, Darren O'Day and Zach Britton each worked an inning. Brach and Britton have pitched on consecutive days.

Jorge Rondon can't be recalled after working 2 2/3 innings yesterday at Triple-A Norfolk. We can cross him off the list. T.J. McFarland can only replace an injured player because he hasn't been down for the minimum 10 days. Eddie Gamboa threw six hitless innings Tuesday night in relief of McFarland.

I'm not sure his arm bounces back that quickly.

Non-roster left-hander Chris Jones is scheduled to start tonight at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Another non-roster southpaw, reliever Cesar Cabral, hasn't allowed a run in 16 2/3 innings and left-handers are 2-for-22 with 10 strikeouts against him. He's thrown one-third of an inning since Monday.

Non-roster right-hander Pedro Beato has allowed two earned runs over his last 13 appearances spanning 19 2/3 innings. He hasn't pitched since Monday.

Another reminder that Steve Johnson is out of options and the Orioles would have to pass him through waivers if they wanted to send him back down. They're not real keen on having another team claim him. If he comes up, they'd like to know that he's not a short-term bullpen solution.

Miguel Gonzalez will try to get back on track tonight after allowing nine runs and 15 hits in 11 innings over his past two starts, with five walks, 10 strikeouts and three home runs. His ERA has risen from 2.93 to 3.83.

Gonzalez is making his third start against the Rays this season. He allowed one run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings on April 8 and no runs and four hits over 7 2/3 innings on May 2. He's 5-4 with a 3.42 ERA in 13 career starts against Tampa Bay.

Logan Forsythe is 3-for-6 with a double against Gonzalez, Asdrubal Cabrera is 3-for-11 with a double and home run, and Evan Longoria is 7-for-28 with a home run and seven strikeouts.

Nathan Karns has allowed two earned runs or fewer in his last five starts, but he's lasted 4 2/3, five, seven, five and 5 2/3 innings. He's faced the Orioles twice this season, allowing six runs and five hits and walking four batters in 5 2/3 innings on April 7, and allowing no runs and two hits in five innings on May 3.

Karns is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles. J.J. Hardy is 2-for-2 with a home run, Adam Jones is 3-for-7 with a double, Chris Davis is 2-for-5 with a home run and Steve Pearce is 2-for-6 with a home run.

Jones rolled his left ankle while scoring in Game 2, but he kept playing. The question is whether he wakes up this morning and the ankle is the size of Bruce Bochy's head.

My guess is Jones will stay in the lineup. That's what he does.
