Machado on his Game 1 ejection and the Orioles' offense (plus more clubhouse quotes)

Manny Machado saw a group of reporters around his locker and knew why they were there ... to ask the 22-year-old third baseman about his Game 1 ejection.

Machado was tossed by home plate umpire Toby Basner in the opener when he struck out in the last of the eighth. He wanted Basner to check with another umpire to see if he checked his swing in time. Basner did not, and Machado slammed his bat to the ground and was tossed.

machado-disappointed-white-sidebar.jpgIt was his third ejection in two years. He was tossed June 27, 2013 for arguing balls and strikes and again on June 8, 2014 for a bat-throwing incident that led to a suspension. Is he concerned getting ejected three times in two years?

"Why would it be? I've got hopefully 20 or more years in my pocket to play baseball. It's going to be more where that came from. I mean, you just have to keep grinding, keep your head up and keep playing some baseball," Machado said. "I struck out. Struck out, plain and simple. What more can you say. I got tossed."

Was he upset that whelp on the call didn't come when he asked for it?

"I guess you could say that," Machado said. "When something happens like that, I guess you want to be fair and get another opinion. Umpires have a really tough job calling strikes and balls. Give a chance to other guys to make that decision."

What about getting so emotional? Was in tough to keep emotions in-check today?

"It's part of baseball. We play 162 games and it's a grind. It's a roller coaster and we have to keep riding it," Machado said.

Did he see the ejection as justified?

"Justified? I got tossed. Plain and simple," he said.

Machado was asked about the Orioles' offense, which came up with six runs in winning the nightcap after they were shutdown by Chris Sale in Game 1.

"It's awesome," he said. "Sale beat us, plain and simple. Coming out and scoring some runs was good. Our offense hasn't been producing with people in scoring position. Good to hit the ball with runners on.

"Think we are on a streak. We haven't been hitting with runners on," he said. "Last couple of days we have been more aggressive. Being the Orioles. When runners are on, we don't let pitches go by. We go out there and attack. You don't want to lay your guard down. You want to swing the bat."

Elsewhere around the Orioles clubhouse:

Chris Davis on Game 2 win: "Yeah, it was big. We knew we had our hands full going into the first game with Sale on the mound. One of the top pitchers in the game. And, he dominated for pretty much the whole game. So it was big to put some runs up early in the game."

Davis, is this finally your hot streak?: "I don't know. I mean, I feel good in the box. Starting to get some hits and do some things right. I think the last few weeks, have been a little bit patient for the most part. Had some games where I was too aggressive. Feel like I've walked more and had better at-bats."

Davis, can the team make a run now?: "I think the last time we played these guys we were starting to get hot. We had Boston in here and we were starting to put some things together. Hopefully we can build off this and keep it going."

Steve Clevenger on the O's getting RBIs from six players: "We put up enough runs today to give Mike (Wright) a chance to do what he can do, and the bullpen to come in and shut the door. Really happy about that. Me and Mike were on the same page today."

Wright on his outing: "There were some pitches I missed (with location). First batter of the game, I missed up and away. Lucky enough to get through five and we got the win, so that was good."

Wright, was this different from your first two starts?: "I don't know, it's just pitching. Some days you have it, and some days you don't. Today, like I said, I tried to battle through it. Glad I gave us a chance to win."

Wright on pitching in a doubleheader with fellow rookie Tyler Wilson: "Yeah, that was awesome. Tyler did such a good job, better than me, but ended up getting the loss. That's just baseball. But for us to be up here together was pretty awesome."

Wright on the end of his scoreless streak: "I just wanted to get a win. Wins are the most important stat and obviously my favorite stat. But all players know you can't go scoreless forever."
