Arrieta and Wieters having big nights (updated)

Jake Arrieta finished the sixth inning with his pitch count at 108 and Jason Berken warming in the bullpen. You have to figure that he's done for the night. Oriole starters have posted a 7.71 ERA during the eight-game losing streak, but Arrieta blanked the Twins on four hits. He walked three and struck out four. Arrieta got a huge double play bouncer from Michael Cuddyer after a one-out single by Jim Thome in the sixth. Two of Arrieta's three walks came in succession after Luke Hughes grounded out to open the fifth. Arrieta lost the eighth and ninth hitters in the Twins' lineup. No good. This part is very good: Arrieta got a called third strike on Denard Span, who froze on a 76 mph curveball, and retired Matt Tolbert on a fly ball to left. Arrieta made one previous start against the Twins, and it came last July at Camden Yards. He allowed five earned runs and seven hits, with four walks and no strikeouts, in four innings. He threw 87 pitches. It was a much different result tonight. Matt Wieters broke open the game in the fifth with a two-out, bases-loaded double with the count full. It was the last pitch thrown by Carl Pavano, and an eighth run scored while he sat in the dugout on shortstop Alexi Casilla's throwing error. Orioles 8, Twins 0. Andino was credited with an infield hit. He has six hits and two walks in his last nine trips to the plate. Wieters has four RBIs tonight. It was the Orioles' third extra-base hit with two outs and runners in scoring position. The rally started with back-to-back singles by Derrek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero. That duo is a combined 3-for-25 with no extra-base hits with runners in scoring position. Mark Reynolds struck out with the bases loaded before Wieters batted. Reynolds was 6-for-14 with three doubles, a homer and 10 RBIs with RISP before striking out. Update: Wieters is 5-for-5 with eight RBIs with runners in scoring position this season. He set a career high with three runs scored tonight. His four RBIs are one short of his career high. Berken has replaced Arrieta. Tonight's attendance: 12,045a
